What Is It?
A backsplash is a vertical extension of a counter, usually made of either stone or tile, intended to protect a wall from damage caused by water or grease. Backsplashes are typically located behind sinks or stoves and serve a protective purpose. Sometimes they only span the length of the sink or stove they sit behind, but oftentimes they extend to occupy the space between counters and cupboards throughout a kitchen. Beyond pure functionality, backsplashes are also an opportunity to add decoration to any New Orleans room. Those made of ceramic tile add subtle detail, whereas backsplashes made of travertine tile are often arranged to form distinct designs or images. Mirrors and windows can also serve as backsplashes, and more unusual materials like tin have also been used to protect walls.
Travertine Tile Backsplash
Travertine tiles are a popular material used to make backsplashes because they are durable. Travertine is a type of limestone that forms around mineral springs and maintains a cream or white color. Compared to other natural stones, travertine tiles are relatively affordable but still more expensive than ceramic tiles. One downside of travertine is its tendency to be easily scratched. Compared to ceramic, travertine is an overall less fragile material.
Ceramic Tile Backsplash
Unlike travertine, ceramic tiles are manufactured and made using clay. They are colored using glaze, and are therefore available in a much larger range of colors. Comparably they also require very little maintenance and resist stains easily. Their greatest weakness is their lightness, which results in a proneness to chips and cracks.
Choosing a Material
Travertine and ceramic tiles are just two backsplash options. As time has passed an increasing number of untraditional materials have been utilized to create a protective barrier between wall and sink/stove. Marble, laminate, polished plaster, glass, and stainless steel are all options. As always, the material you choose to create your kitchen backsplash with is part of a larger budget. You should consider your price range, frequency of kitchen use, and overall aesthetic when choosing a style.
